3 days before election, Wigan Labour leader announces £800k in interest free loans to his ward residents

Blog readers may recall that shortly before nominations opened for the local election, Labour run Wigan council said that it was providing £400,000 in interest free loans to residents living in Labour Council leader Lord Smith's ward.

The interest free loans can be used to improve the energy efficiency of properties, such as wall installation, new combi boilers, double glazing, doors and loft insulation. These Wigan Council interest free loans are not open to any other residents outside of Lord Smith’s ward,  regardless of the age, condition of the property or the financial situation of the resident.

Lord Smith announced yesterday on twitter, 3 days before local and euro elections take place, that the scheme is now £800,000, which is double the orginal declared £400,000 amount.

We have asked Lord Smith why the scheme only provides interest free loans in his ward and not to other houses in Wigan in the same condition.....

He has failed to respond.
